A strong abstract design is the single most important quality I seek . Both intellect and emotion are part of my painting process along with a sense of the moment in which the subject was both observed and painted. I love the gesture of the figure, the drama of light and the sense of place that atmosphere gives the viewer. My studio work is often done from my sketchbooks even if I am working from photo references. The plein air and work from the model or still life are more direct but still use a thumbnail sketch to nail the design. Currently, my main studio is in Chicago as well as a studio in Traverse City, Michigan and love the energy of both places. My paintings also reflect the many places I’ve travelled to and the interesting people I’ve seen. The best part of being an artist is observing people and places and being open to the journey of lifelong learning.
